Teaching content and culture through proficiency-driven instruction

** Click here for my first post about Muchacha. **

One more week to relax and spend much-needed time with family, and then back to the grindstone! In level 1, I’m starting the new year with a fun, interactive lesson developed around the high-energy song Muchacha by Gente de Zona. Just in case you haven’t heard it, here is the music video:

Here is my newly updated Nearpod lesson:

Go here to purchase your own fully-editable copy.

New Additions:

  • A Dreaming Spanish video activity that expands on one of the included infographics
  • Place holders for both a Timed Write and a Timed Retell
  • Additional scaffolding
  • A four corners Jamboard activity that also expands on one of the infographics
  • An embedded reading

Jamboard is so simple to use!

If you are looking for more ways to use it, check out Bertha Delgadillo’s amazing blog: ProfesoraDelgadillo.

But wait! There’s MORE!

I created a Google Forms T/F 5-question quiz. When you open the quiz, you will see blank questions with pre-selected true and false answers. This way, you can tailor your questions to each class and students have a much more difficult time cheating because they must listen to your questions. I state the questions 2 times and 2 times only. If they didn’t hear it, they must guess or leave it blank. For you own copy, click here.

What if I don’t have Nearpod?

I know, Nearpod just changed their service and you can no longer use the Google Slides add-on unless you have a paid membership. For me, it was worth the membership to get the flexibility. Plus, I had created many lessons that I want to re-use in the future. But if you don’t have Nearpod and your school can’t pay for a membership for you…
Download the presentation anyway!
It is a fun movie talk with scaffolded, targeted vocabulary practice. You can exchange the Nearpod slides for Pear Deck or something else. You can also still use the Jamboard / infographic activities and show the videos for listening practice.
If you have other ideas, please share them!
Hopefully, this lesson with help you start your year off with less stress and worry.
Happy teaching and..

  1. Are you using this with a new group of students or are you using it as a repeat activity…I used your first version with my Span 1 students but am thinking of reusing your new edition with same group when we return from our break . . . Just wondering your opinion

  2. This will be a new group for me. But you could always change the perspective and use it with the same group. You could change it to first or third person to get reps in. Or, my favorite, teach the exact same story, only in the past tense.

  3. Feliz año nuevo, Sra. JJ! I LOVE this activity! Its just right for my Spanish Is. What fun! However, my Nearpod will not upload the Slides. Is anyone else having this difficulty? The icon goes round and round for a bit, then says "Could not upload the file-Please try again.". Perhaps I'll try on my desktop at school?

  4. I'm so glad you like it!! I have no idea why it won't allow you to upload to Nearpod. Do you already have an account? Are you possibly logged into Nearpod with more than one account?
