Teaching content and culture through proficiency-driven instruction

I met with a great group of teachers yesterday for collaboration, camaraderie, and lots of really good coffee. We all decided to work on a Movie Talk / Nearpod for this commercial from 2016:

I have written about this particular commercial before. You can find that post here (it’s worth the read, there are some good ideas for the end of the year in there!)

I love this story. My students who are freshmen in university still talk about Frankie! It is one of our most beloved stories. Since I’m once again teaching first year students, I once again updated my storyline about Frankie. That is the beauty of CI – as long as you make it compelling and COMPREHENSIBLE you’re doing a great job!

Here is the slideshow / Nearpod I came up with this time:

Several people have asked why I’m giving away my hard work. Why not put my resources on TPT and sell them? Well, someday I might. But right now, I’m paying it forward. We teachers are in an unprecedented time. The stress is immense. The anxiety is through the roof. And there doesn’t seem to be an end in sight. There are so many teachers feeling incapable of being successful because they’ve been set up to fail. I know that feeling and it’s not fun! I had an extremely stressful period of time when I couldn’t find myself coming or going – I simply had too many expectations, too much stress, and not enough time to “get it right.” I was still new to CI. I asked for help in a Facebook group. I received lots of suggestions. But out of the blue, a very kind teacher saw my call for assistance for what it was: a desperate cry for help. This teacher emailed me with several of her own very well-designed lessons. She didn’t ask for anything in return. She just offered to throw me a life line. I’m not sure Kara Kane Jacobs will ever know how touched I was (and still am!!) that she reached out to help a complete stranger or that her kindness literally saved my semester. I knew then that whenever I could, I would pay it forward.

I hope the Nearpods and tutorials I’ve shared have been helpful to spark ideas and help out a teacher or two in need. We all need kindness. We ALL need life lines from time to time

And here is a quick 5 question T/F quiz. Make several copies, change the answers, and assign in Google Classroom or your LMS. (Check back soon for an embedded reading).

  1. Thank you so much for your generosity! This is truly a lifesaver this year. When I click on "make a copy of the 5 questionT/F quiz" (Google form), the questions are blank. There is a choice for cierto/falso for 5 questions, but the questions themselves show up as "Untitled Question." What am I doing wrong?

  2. That is intentional – I make up the questions as I go, ask them aloud, and use the same key for multiple sections. This makes for very easy grading while still individualizing the quiz for each class. Make sense?
